2018 has been an interesting year for the DMV artist Wale with recent reports confirming that he’s no longer with Atlantic Records. Whether Wale was released or him and the label came to a mutual agreement has yet to be confirmed, but so far the music that has been released since the news broke has oddly been incredible. Wale released “All-Star Breakup” and “Staying Power“; both being released in February, the songs give you the mixtape Wale that the core fans have been missing. Wale career has been drama filled with his reaction to criticism and creative control dealing with labels but despite his past antics, Wale’s lyricism has always been appreciated and praised since “1,000 miles and Running”.
Wale recently released a 4-track EP titled ‘It’s Complicated‘, The EP shows that Wale still has true artistry and creative control is important to an MC like Wale. The EP is a great step towards the right direction since his departure from Atlantic; Wale gives his perspective on love at his age and how complicated it is to find love in today’s climate. The standout song on the EP was “Black Bonnie” where he overloads the track with his unique wordplay, the song gives you a “Lotus Flower Bomb” feel which was one of Wale most successful song mainstream wise. Wale is currently in rebuild mode and no stranger to taking ‘No Days Off‘ and putting in work; Wale is an artist that thrives better when he’s completely in the driver seat, his past mixtapes helped him cultivate his following. With the release of this EP, I’m pretty sure Wale is gearing up for an album or mixtape, the DMV artist has yet to hit his peak in the game so at this point in his career it seems that Wale is more focus than ever.
